EAST LOS ANGELES : Young Muralists Seek School Walls
Elementary schools are invited to apply for free murals painted by students of the Academia de Arte Yepes, a free art school for gifted students in Los Angeles County.
The students have painted an 8-by-21-foot canvas mural at the academy depicting a herd of stegosaurus and are in the process of sketching another dinosaur mural. They have painted two other murals, one for the El Sereno Recreation Center and another for the Boyle Heights Senior Citizens Center, since the academy opened in November.
The senior center mural will be dedicated Friday.
The academy, run by artist George Yepes at Salesian High School, teaches students sketching and painting techniques as well as community service.
The murals are designed to be compatible with the work of nonprofit organizations. For example, the senior center mural, titled “Tierra de mis Padres,” features a scene from Mexico in which a couple dances with friends and relatives after their wedding.
A mural planned for the student center at Cal State L.A. will feature students climbing steps to success through higher education.
