From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta plans to launch a program aimed at curbing what researchers call a growing epidemic of violence against women. An injury prevention specialist at the agency said the CDC will assign 10 experts to the new program. Figures released at a weekend conference on injury control showed that one in eight U.S. women has been a rape victim but only 16% of rapes are reported. Researchers also said nine of 10 U.S. women who are murdered die at the hands of men--half killed by a husband or boyfriend.
