Ayrton Senna cruised to his sixth Monaco Grand Prix victory Sunday at Monte Carlo, Monaco, when his major rivals got into trouble.

Senna, who crashed during Thursday’s warm-up session and started in the second row on the starting grid, was aided by a mistake by Alain Prost. Senna finished the 78 laps in 1 hour 52 minutes 10.947 seconds, averaging 86.259 m.p.h.

It was Senna’s third victory of the season and 39th of his career. He moved five points ahead of Prost into the lead in the driver’s standings.

Senna was 52.118 seconds faster than Britain’s Damon Hill, whose father, Graham, won the Grand Prix five times.

Prost jumped the start and was given a 10-second penalty. He came in on the 12th lap to serve it and stalled his engine twice. He was almost two laps behind when he got back on the track, and finished fourth.

Michael Schumacher, who took over the lead when Prost dropped back, went out because of a blown engine on the 33rd lap.
