The United States, led by Pete Sampras and Michael Chang, won a record fourth title at the World Team Cup Sunday in Dusseldorf, Germany, beating Germany, 3-0.

Sampras defeated Michael Stich, 6-4, 6-2, and Chang downed Carl-Uwe Steeb, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). The doubles team of Richey Reneberg and Patrick McEnroe completed the sweep against Stich and Patrick Kuhnen, 6-4, 6-3.

Sampras played what he called “my best match of the week,” and then, despite being cheered by a home crowd of 7,800, Steeb wasn’t able to hang on to a 5-2 lead against Chang in the second-set tiebreaker as the world’s No. 9 player reeled off five consecutive points.
