Bob Wickman held Baltimore hitless for 6 1/3 innings and combined with Steve Farr on a three-hitter Tuesday night, giving the New York Yankees a 1-0 victory over the Orioles at New York.

Pat Kelly’s home run in the fifth inning was enough for Wickman (5-0) to win for the 11th time in 12 major league decisions. He pitched eight innings and gave up three hits. He struck out three and walked three.

Wickman did not give up a hit until Leo Gomez singled with one out in the seventh. Gomez was later thrown out stealing. Chris Hoiles was then hit by a pitch and Paul Carey singled for his first major league hit, but David Segui grounded out.

“It’s just a matter of me getting a lot of breaks right now,” said Wickman, who is unbeaten despite a 3.93 earned-run average. “I don’t know when it’s going to end.”

Farr pitched the ninth for his 10th save. He has saved eight of Wickman’s 11 career victories.

Baltimore’s Jamie Moyer (0-2) gave up 10 hits before being relieved by Alan Mills with two outs in the seventh. He was seeking his first major league victory since 1990, but instead lost his 10th consecutive decision, including both of his starts since being recalled by Orioles from the minors last Thursday.

Kelly connected on a 2-and-0 pitch with one out in the fifth. Moyer had given up six hits in the first four innings.

Toronto 4, Milwaukee 2--Joe Carter drove in three runs at Toronto, helping the Blue Jays to their sixth consecutive victory.

Carter’s two-run double in the first inning gave him 40 runs batted in, second in the American League to Cleveland’s Albert Belle, who has 42. Carter added a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Juan Guzman (4-0) gave up seven hits during 7 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked one. Reliever Mike Timlin got the last out of the eighth inning and Duane Ward closed for his 13th save.

Bill Wegman (3-7) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings.

Texas 5, Cleveland 1--Jose Canseco homered for his first RBI in a week and Charlie Leibrandt kept his road record perfect at Cleveland.

Canseco’s solo home run in the eighth inning ended his season-high string of six games without an RBI. He has eight home runs.

Leibrandt (5-2) gave up one run and eight hits during his first complete game, striking out five and walking two to improve to 4-0 on the road. Dennis Cook (3-2) was the loser.

Detroit 4, Boston 1--David Wells pitched four-hit ball for 8 1/3 innings and Cecil Fielder homered for the Tigers at Detroit.

Wells (6-1) had not defeated the Red Sox since Aug. 16, 1989, at Boston. Since then, he had made 10 appearances against them, including seven starts, and gone 0-7.

Wells struck out five and walked three in improving to 3-9 against the Red Sox. Mike Henneman got two outs for his 10th save.

Fielder hit a solo home run, his ninth, to pull the Tigers even at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Detroit broke it open in the sixth with three runs on only one hit, Mickey Tettleton’s triple against Frank Viola (4-4).

Kansas City 3, Chicago 2--Wally Joyner, who had homered earlier, doubled home the winning run in the ninth inning at Chicago.

Felix Jose opened the ninth with an infield hit off Jack McDowell (7-3). After a sacrifice by Brian McRae and an intentional walk to George Brett, Joyner hit a line drive down the right-field line.

Tom Gordon (3-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the victory.

Jeff Montgomery got three outs for his 12th save.

Oakland 3, Minnesota 1--Lance Blankenship robbed Kirby Puckett of a homer and drove in the go-ahead run at Oakland as the Athletics handed the Twins their eighth consecutive loss.

Blankenship put the A’s ahead, 2-1, with an RBI single in the fifth inning. In the third, he reached over the fence in center field to rob Puckett of a two-run homer.
