China’s Leaders
Ex-President Nixon makes a very good case for the U.S. continuing China’s most-favored-nation status (Commentary, May 18). Nixon doesn’t address, however, a most important element in preventing a dictator from becoming repressive and abusive; that is, the likelihood of total disgrace or humiliation within his own lifetime. If more of the world’s dictators feared the fate of Romania’s Ceausescu or Italy’s Mussolini, they would be less inclined to violate human rights in order to maintain their power and perks.
As an example to the next generation of Chinese leaders, we need to ensure that the present generation of entrenched old fools are disgraced before they die for their arrogant and selfish ways.
