LOS ANGELES : Trial Ordered in Shooting Spree at MCA Headquarters

The unemployed truck driver accused of shooting at the MCA World Headquarters last month, injuring seven workers inside, was no madman bent on killing someone but only wanted to “punch some holes in MCA’s corporate image,” defense attorneys said during a preliminary hearing Thursday.

Deputy Public Defender Alan Sharpe said John Brian Jarvis mistakenly believed that the entertainment giant’s 15-story “Black Tower” in Universal City was wrapped in bulletproof glass and told detectives after his arrest: “I hope I didn’t hit anyone.”

But Municipal Court Judge Michael T. Sauer bound the case over to Superior Court and denied a defense request to dismiss seven of 16 felony counts against Jarvis, who blames MCA for blackballing him and causing his chronic unemployment.

Sauer set arraignment for June 10 and kept Jarvis’ bail at $1 million.
