City to Honor VFW for Years of Service
After 51 years of service to the community, the local post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be recognized by San Fernando during a Memorial Day ceremony Sunday.
Mayor Dan Acuna and other city officials will unveil a plaque with the VFW logo at the city’s “Welcome” sign to commemorate the organization’s contributions of time and money to many local causes.
“I just feel it’s a thank-you gesture for years of service to the community, the youth and the empowerment of the community,” said Angel Perez Jr., a member of VFW Post 3834.
Perez said the 248-member organization donates more than $10,000 annually to fund community projects, such as the San Fernando Police Department’s anti-drug program, a program providing Halloween bags containing safety tips to schools and the YWCA.
The Memorial Day ceremony will take place at noon near Wolfskill and Truman streets, where a large sign greets visitors to the city. A reception will follow at the VFW headquarters at 111 Hager St.
