EAST LOS ANGELES : Young Artists Asked for Murals on Voting
One Stop Immigration and Education Center will open an art gallery and studio for young artists this week.
To celebrate the opening of the Artworks center, One Stop will have a mural competition in which young artists will be asked to submit ideas for works depicting the “Power of the Hispanic Vote.”
The concepts will be judged June 18 and murals will be commissioned from the competition. The results will be displayed on the center’s Whittier Wall, 3600 Whittier Blvd., which has space for six murals.
“We hope to have six different winners . . . all conveying the same message--that is, the importance of voting, especially in the Hispanic community,” said Celina Casillas.
The Artworks center will be housed at 1401 Bailey St., where classes on immigration are held. Summer programs will include daylong art sessions for children and possible work-study programs in the fall, Casillas said.
