Summer Splash : Bursting Out All Over : Southern California counties from Santa Barbara to San Diego promise Fourth of July fireworks and family entertainment

Fireworks will be bursting in air around the Southland on the Fourth of July holiday. The following is a county-by-county sample of public events:

Los Angeles

* “America the Beautiful--A Family Celebration With Fireworks” features conductor John Mauceri leading the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in Rodgers & Hammerstein tunes, Gershwin’s “American in Paris” and other lively pieces. (July 2-4). Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N. Highland Ave., Hollywood.

* The Woodland Hills Chamber of Commerce is again sponsoring a fireworks display, sky divers and live music at Pierce College Stadium, 6201 Winnetka Ave., Woodland Hills. The show begins about 5 p.m.

* The Tri-City Chamber--Northridge, Granada Hills and Chatsworth--and the Cal State Northridge athletic department are preparing their annual day of entertainment (negotiations are in the works for the Coasters to perform), parachute jumping, games, contests and a 30-minute fireworks display. Cal State Northridge, north campus.

* Come aboard the Queen Mary--for free--to watch the fireworks explode over Long Beach Harbor, or watch from the north or south shores. The ship reopens June 23, with fireworks each Friday and Saturday June 25-Labor Day, but a major display, along with musical entertainment, will be reserved for July 4. Parking is $3 in Queen Mary lot. Guided tours of restricted areas of ship, $5.

* The biggest fireworks extravaganza in either valley--San Gabriel or San Fernando--takes place at the Rose Bowl, 1001 Rose Bowl Drive, Pasadena, with ground and air displays.

* “Kaboom” is back for a repeat performance at L.A. Fairplex, 1101 W. McKinley Ave., Pomona. The City of Pomona and Fairplex event begins with an afternoon of food booths, games and entertainment in the infield.

* The San Fernando Valley Parks & Recreation Department’s 25-minute fireworks show will take place at San Fernando Valley Recreation Park, 208 Park Ave., San Fernando. Preceded by food and entertainment.

* The City of Lancaster hosts a community Fourth of July at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, 155 E. Ave. I, Lancaster. Opens at 4 p.m. with food booths, music, children’s carnival games; adult entertainment, including the Rivingtons. Fireworks begin about 9 p.m. Free.

* Six Flags Magic Mountain’s “Batman Night of Fireworks and Laser Extravaganza” opens this weekend and runs nightly except Mondays through Sept. 6. On July 4, families can take in the theme park during the day and catch the show at night at Magic Mountain Parkway, Valencia.

* The Long Beach Fire Department’s annual fireworks display will take place at Long Beach Veterans Stadium, 5000 Lew Davis Drive. Police canine demonstrations, parade and music; picnics encouraged.

* Fireworks at Saugus Speedway, 22500 Soledad Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, will take place July 3, following the stock car racing. The fireworks display is included in race admission.

Orange

* The Huntington Beach Country Fourth celebration includes a July 4 parade, the March of Dimes Eight-Kilometer Run, a country fair and festival (10 a.m.-dusk) and a Wild West Fireworks Show at Huntington Beach High School Stadium, Main Street and Yorktown Avenue (gates open at 6:30 p.m.).

* Fireworks begin at Knott’s Berry Farm at 9:30 p.m. Included in park admission. 8039 Beach Blvd., Buena Park.

Riverside

* Craft and food booths and family-oriented activities at Riverside Community College will precede the Riverside Parks & Recreation fireworks display from Mt. Rubidoux. Watch from the college, at 4800 Magnolia Ave., or from 7th Street. Free.

* The Class-A Palm Springs Angels will try to generate some fireworks in a baseball game against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at 6 p.m. A real fireworks display will follow. Angels Stadium, Sunrise Way and Baristo Road, in Sunrise Park.

San Bernardino

* Auto racing--featuring sprint cars, dwarf cars, an old-timers race and more--kicks off a three-hour program that culminates with a 45-minute fireworks show. National Orange Show Fairgrounds, 689 S. E St., San Bernardino.

Ventura

* The City of Ventura will hold a fireworks display from the beach off Ventura Pier at dawn July 4. Followed by a parade and a street fair downtown, with booths of food and crafts; nine stages offer entertainment. Free.

* Oxnard plans a 30-minute fireworks show at Oxnard High School, H and 5th streets. Entertainment and food booths.

Santa Barbara

* Santa Barbara will hold a Fourth of July parade with floats, bands and community groups at 1 p.m. Begins at Micheltorena and State streets to Cota Street. The Santa Barbara Symphony will give a free community pops concert at County Courthouse sunken gardens. There are tentative plans for an old-fashioned picnic in Alameda Park, street dances and a laser show. No fireworks.

Kern County

* Festivities will begin about 10 a.m. in Central Park of California City, about 15 miles outside Mojave off California 14. Activities include arts and crafts, food booths, entertainment and, of course, fireworks. Free.

San Diego County

* The Del Mar Fair, San Diego’s county fair (which begins June 15), culminates with Fourth of July fireworks, following a concert at the grandstand (all included in fair admission). The Del Mar Fairgrounds are at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar.

* Sea World will expand its nightly fireworks show for the holiday. The “Summer Nights” program (June 19-Labor Day) also includes “Shamu’s Night Magic,” an ice extravaganza featuring world-class skaters, a fireworks and laser show and a sea lion and otter show.
