Manager Davey Johnson met with pitcher Tom Browning to try to defuse the Cincinnati Reds’ latest clubhouse flap.

Browning derided general manager Jim Bowden on Sunday after an 8-4 victory over the New York Mets, complaining that he was being taken out of games too quickly and blaming Bowden, whom he called the “boy wonder.”

Bowden, 32, is the youngest general manager in the major leagues. Several Reds players have privately ridiculed him, but Browning was the first to use the name publicly.

Browning is 3-3 with a team-high 6.27 earned-run average in nine starts. He has pitched 47 1/3 innings and has allowed 76 hits. He gave up three homers Sunday and left after six innings.

Nolan Ryan, already on the disabled list for the second time during his final season, cut his left foot in a boating accident and will have to stay off of it for about two weeks, the Texas Rangers said. . . . Texas pitching coach Claude Osteen is expected to rejoin the team tonight after being diagnosed as having a bleeding ulcer.
