Norwalk-La Mirada : Military Urged to Remove 12 Fuel Tanks Near School

Share

The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District’s board asked the Department of Defense to remove a 12-tank fuel depot near an elementary school in Norwalk.

Board members voted 6-0 recently to approve a resolution that calls the fuel tanks a threat to the community. The tanks are on a 50-acre lot next to 560-student Dolland Elementary School at Norwalk Boulevard and Excelsior Drive.

Studies by the Defense Department concluded that the tanks, which hold up to 38 million gallons of jet fuel, could leak contaminants or explode during a strong earthquake.

Structural reinforcement of the tanks has already begun, but district officials said the work is taking too long. The tanks should be removed because ground water and soil near the site already have been contaminated, the resolution says.
