Compton : Memorial Service Is Friday for 2 Officers Slain on Duty

Share

A city memorial service for two police officers who were shot in the line of duty in February will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The service for Kevin Michael Burrell and reserve officer James Wayne MacDonald, the only officers shot to death on duty in the city’s history, was postponed for more than three months while police investigated the killings, said police Lt. Steve Roller. In April, Regis Deon Thomas of San Pedro was arrested and charged with the officers’ murders.

The Police Department will fly MacDonald’s parents and brother from San Jose for the long-awaited service in the college’s Velodrome stadium, Roller said. Along with plaques and certificates, the Burrell and MacDonald families each will be given a check for $15,000, Roller said, as a first installment from the memorial fund set up by local officers to aid the families.
