BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Indians’ Belle Has Suspension Upheld
The three-game suspension of Cleveland outfielder Albert Belle was upheld Wednesday after a hearing by American League president Dr. Bobby Brown. Belle, leading the major leagues in home runs with 17, and runs batted in with 48, was suspended for charging Kansas City pitcher Hipolito Pichardo on May 13.
The suspension begins Friday in Cleveland where the Indians play a three-game series against Minnesota.

The Colorado Rockies released right-hander Bryn Smith, 2-4 with an 8.49 ERA in 11 appearances this season. . . . Mike Greenwell was activated by the Boston Red Sox. . . .The Texas Rangers activated left-hander Craig Lefferts from the disabled list. . . .The Milwaukee Brewers placed shortstop Pat Listach was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a leg injury he suffered Tuesday at Seattle. . . . Mark McGwire, bothered by persistent soreness from a bruise in his left heel, had the foot placed in a cast and will remain out indefinitely.
