Student Is Not Charged in Shooting

Prosecutors declined to file charges Thursday against an 18-year-old student from Beverly Hills who police contended set into motion a gang-related shooting in front of his Van Nuys private school that left a rival seriously injured.

Christopher Yeung and two juveniles were arrested after the Tuesday afternoon shooting on Lanark Street in front of Montclair Prep School that left Dale Jung, 20, wounded. The shooter who wounded Jung was still being sought by Los Angeles police.

Yeung was arrested because investigators said that he instigated the shooting when he called fellow gang members following a confrontation with another student who belonged to a rival gang.

Three associates arrived to back him up. They confronted Jung, also a gang rival, and one of them shot Jung, police said.

But Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert L. Cohen declined to charge Yeung with attempted murder without more evidence against the youth.

“We sent it back for further investigation,” Cohen said. “It is not all that clear what he did. We have to show he set this in motion to shoot the guy. We believe that is what happened, but our belief doesn’t get it. They are working on gathering evidence to prove that.”

The two minors arrested, 16 and 17, have been turned over to juvenile authorities for prosecution. Meanwhile, police have identified the suspected gunman but had not captured him Thursday.

Yeung has been expelled from Montclair, school officials said.
