PACOIMA : Student Videos Vie for Awards

Share

One student video takes a tale about a teen-ager who loses his little brother in a department store and turns it into a lesson on responsibility.

Another helped students sharpen their Spanish-language skills by producing and directing a play in Spanish. Yet another explores the common bonds of the world’s religions.

The wide-ranging video presentations by students in Pacoima, North Hollywood and Arleta are among 48 finalists for the 1993 Video in the Classroom awards. The awards are handed out annually to students and teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District who make creative use of video technology in the classroom.

“It’s another tool to help students read, write and think clearly,” said Hector Viera, a programming coordinator with KLCS, the school district’s television station.

James Gleason, who teaches radio, television and film production at Pacoima Middle School, said ninth-graders who work on video projects all year look forward to the annual competition.

“It’s been such a motivating factor,” Gleason said. “To me, it’s one of the things the district is doing right.”

Besides Pacoima Middle School, other San Fernando Valley schools vying for top honors are North Hollywood High School, Chatsworth High School and Vena Avenue Elementary School.
