LAPD Delays Plan to Redraw Boundaries
Top Los Angeles Police Department officials in the San Fernando Valley have temporarily tabled a plan to redraw the boundaries of the area’s five police stations, Deputy Chief Mark A. Kroeker said Thursday.
The plan would have gathered the Valley communities of Encino, Canoga Park, Studio City and Sunland under the jurisdiction of one of the Valley’s five stations, rather than splitting those communities between different stations, as is now the case.
Kroeker said the plan, which was being considered by the five station captains and himself, would create “a major problem with our statistical gathering” since it would mean splitting the existing reporting districts.
“If we split reporting districts, we’ve got to go back and retool the computers in a way that is very expensive to the city,” Kroeker said.
Similar problems have arisen from the realignment of communities in the Valley, such as in 1992 when North Hills was created out of what had previously been known as Sepulveda.
Despite these problems, Kroeker said the plan to establish a dialogue on realigning police station boundaries with the Valley’s communities is not dead. Valley captains have met with Kroeker twice, and Kroeker hopes to continue the dialogue with community leaders in the fall.
