Sign of the Times: Polonia’s New Role
After batting practice the other night, as the Angels prepared to play Baltimore, Luis Polonia spent half an hour signing autographs for youngsters. All of his teammates were in the clubhouse.
As I watched Polonia sit on the dugout rail, cap on backward, accepting mitts, ball and odd pieces of paper, I thought of the whole role-model controversy.
It’s not that an athlete or actor chooses to be a hero. He is one. He is one because a kid says so.
Polonia probably knows that a brush with greatness can change the life of a 9-year-old.
Michael Jordan and many others should take a lesson.
