EAST LOS ANGELES : Depot Considered for Historic Status
The state Department of Parks and Recreation is considering a recommendation by the county Board of Supervisors to designate the East Los Angeles train station as a point of historic interest.
“All you have to do is see it to know why,” said architect Joyce Zaitlin, who initiated the effort for the designation. She published a book two years ago on architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who designed the station, which has been boarded up and unoccupied since 1987. “It’s a gem of some of the railroad architecture that sprung up as the railroads incorporated into the West.”
The supervisors approved a motion April 27 to send the recommendation along to the state Department of Parks and Recreation. If the application is approved, any development on the site or refurbishing of the structure would have to be studied and outlined in an environmental impact report.
