SANTA PAULA : New Transit Agency to Provide Bus Service

Share

The Santa Paula City Council has approved the formation of a federally funded transit agency that will provide hourly bus service on weekdays in the Santa Clara Valley and dial-a-ride service in Santa Paula and Fillmore for two years.

The new bus service is expected to begin the first week of 1994.

Federal transportation funds will pay 88% of the about $1.6 million needed to operate the Valley Intercity Service Transit Authority during the two-year trial period.

The program will be administered by Ventura County, with the county and two cities sharing administrative costs.

Santa Paula’s annual expenses are expected to average about $46,000 during the trial period, and increase to $240,000 if the program is extended, said City Administrator Arnold Dowdy.

When service begins, buses will operate hourly in the California 126 corridor between Fillmore and the city of Ventura, Dowdy said. Bus service will also be provided to commuters seeking a connection to Metrolink trains at the Moorpark station. Fillmore has already approved a joint-powers agreement to set up the transit system.
