Not All Readers Think New Logo Is Ducky

Share

Readers responded quickly to an invitation to call a TimesLink phone-in line and voice an opinion on The Mighty Ducks’ logo and uniform colors that were introduced Monday by Walt Disney Co. Chairman Michael Eisner. Here is a sampling of the 175-plus calls received Tuesday:

Dana Diaz, Lake Forest: I have to tell you that I do not like this logo. It seems dark and sinister and it does not give me any good feelings.

Kevin Lane, Perris: I like the logo a lot. The duck bill displays aggressiveness and hockey is a very aggressive game.

Robert Dunn, Huntington Beach: I absolutely hate the new logo. I think it looks like either Michael Eisner or Bob Hope.

Mike Pike, Temecula: I do like the logo--it looks great and has character.

Chris Carman, Corona del Mar: I think the logo is fantastic. They took the duck and instead of something childish, they show intimidation, aggressiveness, go-for-it attitude, the sticks crossing behind the duck’s mask that somewhat keep the puck out of the mat and I think the colors are fantastic.

Mike Davis, Orange: The uniform seems to be copied from the San Jose Sharks. The colors aren’t that good. The arena is pink. This is sad, pathetic, makes California look really worse than it is.

Pat Huber, Yorba Linda: General consensus in his office is that it’s a good looking logo, it’s cool, it’s more aggressive than you would expect from Disney. But what’s with the new teal color? Every new team has teal and it seems to him that teal is passe. Thinking a British racing green would be better.

David Smith, La Habra: I think it is absolutely ridiculous. First of all, the name itself is going to give us enough ridicule in the NHL. I’ve been a hockey fan for over 20 years so I think I am in a position to gauge that. I think the way they have bent up the mask and played up the duck theme is ridiculous. I’ve heard mention of it looking like a mask Goofy or Donald Duck would wear.

Ira Zimmerman, San Juan Capistrano: I think the logo is really great--in fact, it is a quack up!

Linda Sanders, South Laguna Beach: I think the logo is warlike and indicates hostility and aggressiveness; so therefore it is perfect for the sport of ice hockey.

Eric Wong, Orange: Disney has always stood for utmost class and professionalism, until now. New cartoon logo for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks is, albeit unintentional, an affront to the hockey community. It shows disrespect for the tradition of the NHL and will serve as an embarrassment to those professional players who will have to wear it on the ice.

Elsie Kogler, Costa Mesa: I like the logo, it gives a healthy image for fighting for something worthwhile--that is, fighting for sports.

Ralph Dumke, Orange: I do not like it. It is sinister and very inappropriate for sports as it generates the exact opposite of the impression that I think that we are trying to convey to young people today. They need to have something that they can look up to not something that would inspire what this logo would do for them.

James Roehm, Fullerton: I think the logo is perfect, because it appeals to both children and youth, plus it appeals to adults too. It’s somewhat like the Kings, it’s pretty bad ass, I think it will go pretty well--it’s not wimpy looking and it’s not like the Disney memorabilia like they always use.

Ron Malouf, Port Barmouth, Canada: It is fantastic. It is a great blend of mayhem and Disney brilliance.

Bob Bakke, Anaheim: The logo is terrific. It is the combination of fun and menacing--I want to go buy a T-shirt and a hat and I am not even a hockey fan yet.

John Zeisler, Fullerton: I do not like the logo at all. It is very impersonal and has no eyes, no feelings, can’t connect with it at all. Make it something that is alive--not a mask.

Ethel Avares, Anaheim: I do not like the sneering look on the Mighty Duck. I think it would be better to have a triumphant type of look like seeing Mickey after he has wiped up the enemy, wiping off his hands and say “Yeah.”

Cathy Udovch, El Toro: Kind of “if-ey” on the mask. I kind of like the idea that they used a goaltender’s mask, the idea of having the two crossed sticks makes it look like a skull and crossbones I suppose. I like the colors because they are what you see on a Mallard Duck, but having the mask in the shape of a duck bill is kind of cheesy.

Melinda McGrew, Santa Ana: Yes, I like the Ducks logo. The ice aqua blue is excellent--perfect for ice hockey, but it needs a little contrasting color. Something opposite on the color wheel to set it off--maybe purple or pink to really make it stand out. Also, the triangle Z in the background needs to become like an M for Mighty Ducks. Maybe even a D somehow?

Charlene Walters, Santa Ana: I do not like the logo, it looks like something Disney would draw and have in their cartoons, not on an NHL jersey.

Craig Morrow, Costa Mesa: Although I like the colors of the jersey, I think the logo itself looks dated. It takes on the appearance of the former Pittsburgh Penguins abandoned logo with the triangular emblem with the two sticks. I was expecting a bit more from Disney with its talent.

Andy Michaels, Brea: I think the logo is kiddie-like, it is just like the name of the team and it looks kind of stupid. I don’t know why you guys even bother to ask what people think about it because Eisner--just like naming the team--is going to do whatever he wants to do with it anyway and force us to live with it.

Kevin Weston, Huntington Beach: I think it is something new, grabs everyone’s attention. Hockey is an incredible sport as it is and it will bring a lot of people’s attention because the design is created in a different way of how you look at hockey. Put some time into it and it does look awesome. I think it is great!

Mel Johnson, Huntington Beach: It has many poor traits in it. 1) the triangle pointing downward that means submission; 2) has five colors which means indecision, and 3) the goalie’s mask on the top of the puck and the sticks crossed gives a symbol of defense. So here we have a team with a name like Ducks interjecting submissiveness, indecision and defensiveness--a real good start for a new franchise.

Nancy Collins, Laguna Niguel: I think the Mighty Ducks logo is great. Sports have gotten so serious and I think it is time we put a little fun back into sports.
