Bill Would Allow Phone Companies Into Local Cable TV: Two U.S. senators introduced a bill that would allow telephone companies to provide cable television service in their local areas. The measure would promote investment and competition in the industry, said the co-sponsors, Jack Danforth (R-Mo.) and Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii). Many phone companies already provide cable TV service in rural areas and outside their own service territories. The legislation would prohibit phone companies from buying out or combining with existing cable companies, and they would not be able to cross-subsidize their cable systems with phone revenue.
