The Wiggle After the Swing Is What Saved This Golfer

Share

Holly Reynolds, a University of Kansas junior, inadvertently went fishing during the NCAA women’s golf tournament at Athens, Ga.

Her ball was in shallow water in a lake guarding the 13th hole. According to Golf World, she swung and barely moved the ball, but the swing did send a four-inch fish onto the bank.

“All I thought was: ‘Fish out of water, put fish back in water,’ ” Reynolds said.

Because her ball was still within the hazard boundary, she could have been assessed a two-stroke penalty for removing “loose impediments.”

An official cited a rule that allows the removal of a live snake, but bars moving a dead snake since it would be considered a loose impediment. Fortunately for Reynolds, the fish was still flapping and she wasn’t penalized.

Trivia time: Speaking of Kansas, what historic sports accomplishment was credited to the Jayhawks this school year?

Class by himself: After New York Met pitcher Anthony Young lost his 19th consecutive game in a streak going back to last season, Chicago Cub catcher Rick Wilkins said: “He’s the best 0-19 pitcher I’ve ever seen.”

Young became 0-20 in losing to the Cubs on Tuesday night. So it’s assumed that he is now the “best” 0-20 pitcher as well.

Footwork: In a recent batting practice, a hard grounder by Dodger Eric Karros hit Manager Tom Lasorda on the ankle. But Lasorda, who was fielding at third base, didn’t flinch. And two days later, Lasorda was still telling a nonbelieving Karros that the ball wasn’t hit hard enough to even bruise him.

“This is really bugging Karros,” Lasorda said, as he revealed a swollen ankle to Tim Wallach.

Said Karros: “He should have gone down. I smoked it. I hit it so hard and he refused to let me know how hard I hit him. I could see it when he was sitting there in the dugout, one ankle was huge. But he still wouldn’t let me know. I had to sneak in there when he had his socks off to see it.”

Field of no-shows: A Class-A minor league game between Quad City and Rockford, Ill., didn’t attract much interest. Attendance was announced at 15, meaning there were more people on the field than in the stands.

Moreover, the attendance figure was inflated. It included Rocky the Ducky, Rockford’s mascot.

High finance: As a gambler, LPGA Hall of Fame golfer Nancy Lopez is in the minor leagues compared to Michael Jordan.

“I’m not a heavy bettor,” she said. “I bet for Cokes and stuff. I choke when I play for $5.”

FYI: Joe Louis, already with a special place in boxing history, is getting one in philately.

The U.S. Postal Service is issuing a commemorative stamp June 22 honoring the late heavyweight champion, making Louis the first fighter so recognized.

Trivia answer: Kansas became the first team in NCAA history to win a football bowl game, play in the NCAA basketball tournament’s Final Four and earn a trip to the College World Series in the same school year. The Jayhawks also played in the women’s NCAA golf tournament.

Quotebook: John McKay when asked about his team’s execution as coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers: “I’m all for it.”
