HOCKEY Making The Ice 1) Sub-freezing solution pumped into main pipeline under concrete floor. 2) Solution flows into 10 miles of smaller pipes embedded in concrete spanning the entire floor. 3) Water is sprayed on top of concrete--now below freezing--to form 1 1/2-inch layer of ice. Finishing the ice Zamboni machine smoothes ice surface. Melting the Ice 1) Hot water is run through the pipes. 2) Ice begins to thaw. 3) Zamboni machine sweeps chunks of ice into drainage trough at edge of court.
