IRVINE : Zoning Change OKd to Allow Fire Station

Share

Plans to build a county fire station near the Civic Center took a step forward last week when the City Council approved a zoning change for the station site.

The next step is for the County Fire Department to submit design plans to the city, but city officials aren’t sure when the plans will be presented.

If the plans are approved and funding is secured, the station will be built on a 10.4-acre piece of city-owned land on Barranca Parkway between Harvard Avenue and the San Diego Creek Channel.

The triangle-shaped plot had been set aside for open space or parkland before the council last Tuesday rezoned it for “government facility” use to accommodate the fire station.

Only a portion of the land will be used for the fire station, and the remainder might still be developed into a park or recreation area, said Robert C. Johnson, Irvine’s director of community development.

The land is located among several new and proposed housing developments, Johnson said.

Firefighters “need to provide a quick response time, and this area fit the need,” he said.
