OXNARD : Trial Set in Deaths of Two Pedestrians

Share

An Aug. 2 trial date was set Wednesday for a 21-year-old man accused of killing two pedestrians while driving drunk along Oxnard Boulevard in Oxnard.

Gary Scott Samaniego of Camarillo is charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter in the May 2 deaths of Oxnard residents Baltazar Camacho Bojorquez, 37, and his nephew, Eleno Leyva Bojorquez, 20.

Samaniego is free on $10,000 bail, Deputy Dist. Atty. James D. Ellison said.

Witnesses testifying at a preliminary hearing earlier this month said Samaniego was traveling in excess of 65 m.p.h. when he ran a red light at Seventh Avenue and hit the two men, who were in a crosswalk.

Investigators said after the accident that Samaniego’s blood-alcohol level was 0.29--nearly four times the level at which a driver is presumed intoxicated.

A taxi driver who witnessed the 1:40 a.m. accident testified that the two victims had their backs to Samaniego’s car when they were hit and did not see the vehicle coming.

A 61-year-old Oxnard man who was walking his bicycle across the street was also injured in the accident.
