WHERE TO SAY ‘I DO’: The search for the perfect wedding site in the San Fernando Valley is like the hunt for the perfect home. Three things matter most: location, location, location. . . . ROUGH START: Golfers Dave Berganio and Mark Singer struggled Thursday in the first round of the U. S. Open. Berganio, 24, a Crespi High graduate and one of only three amateurs in the event, fired a four-over-par 74 at the tournament in Springfield, N. J., leaving him eight shots behind first place. . . . Singer, a 27-year-old pro from Simi Valley High, shot a 77. . . . After today’s round, the field will be trimmed to the low 60 scorers or all players within 10 shots of the lead (C17).

KNOCKOUT: Bored with sitting around the house recovering from a lung infection, Kent Gates of Mojave (above) took up prospecting. And using $800 worth of equipment from a Northridge company, he found near Acton what could be the largest chunk of gold discovered in Los Angeles County in recent history--a 12.8-ounce nugget that one expert said could be worth as much as $13,000 (B1). . . . Other experts were skeptical, saying nuggets that big are truly rare hereabouts.

ART FILMS: For years, the small Laemmle Theatre in Encino struggled to satisfy Valley film buffs by squeezing a foreign or specialty film onto one of its three screens each week.
