Croat-Muslim Battles Imperil New Bosnia Truce
Skirmishes between Muslims and Croats threatened a new cease-fire Friday, but fighting eased in Serb-dominated regions.
A Canadian U.N. peacekeeper was killed in fighting near Sarajevo, 40 minutes after the noon cease-fire was supposed to silence guns across Bosnia-Herzegovina. U.N. officials said it was unclear who was responsible.
Croatian radio reported fighting late Friday in or near the Bosnian towns of Vares, Visoko and Novi Travnik--all northwest of Sarajevo. Tension also continued between Croatian and Muslim forces in the southwestern town of Mostar.
The easing of the Serbs’ attacks Friday appeared connected with their desire to show goodwill before talks on a new peace plan.
Meanwhile, an advance team of U.S. military officers arrived in Macedonia on Friday to prepare for deployment of the first American ground troops in the former Yugoslav republics. The U.S. soldiers will join 700 U.N. peacekeepers already stationed in northern Macedonia.
