Theater Construction OK Ignored Public Input

Share

* Mann Theatres is planning to build a nine-screen theater complex with seating for 2,400 in the existing location of the J. C. Penney store at 16830 Devonshire St.

A public hearing about this was held in Van Nuys on June 7 with about 40 concerned neighbors in attendance. The initial study and checklist prepared by the office of the City Clerk in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act revealed the following:

* This construction will result in an increase in noise levels.

* It will result in exposure of people to severe noise levels.

* It will result in the need for new water systems.

* It will have a negative aesthetic effect.

Despite the objections of about 300 local residents, the permit to build was approved.

Why have a hearing concerning our neighborhood when our wishes and concerns are not taken into account?

I came to this country many years ago in search of freedom, democracy and justice for all. After attending this meeting, my dreams and faith in justice came crumbling down.

It seems big money talks.
