DANA POINT : Council Members Vote Curreri Mayor

Councilwoman Judy Curreri, a public health nurse for Orange County and one of the leaders of the city’s incorporation drive in the late 1980s, was named mayor Tuesday night by a unanimous vote of her council colleagues.

Curreri’s one-year stint as mayor will be her second. She served as the city’s first mayor after Dana Point became a city in January, 1989.

Curreri, who was the leading vote-getter when she was reelected to her council seat last June, takes over the post from Karen Lloreda of Capistrano Beach.

Curreri said she hopes to launch a new series of regular discussions with residents and business people to be called the “round table with the mayor.”

“It would be a series of open discussions with people from all walks of life,” Curreri said. “They would include all kinds of things, such as what is going on in your neighborhood, what’s on your mind.”

One of the topics she wants to focus on in the meetings and throughout her tenure as mayor is gangs, Curreri said.

Councilman William L. Ossenmacher, the newest member of the five-member council who was elected last June, was named mayor pro tem.
