Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Youthful Gunman Wounds 6 Children

A youthful gunman opened fire with a semiautomatic weapon on a crowded swimming pool in Washington, D.C., wounding six children and then escaping by car. Some were hit as they frolicked in the water while others were wounded nearby, police said. They said more gunfire erupted minutes later in a nearby park but that no injuries resulted from the second incident. It was the latest violent episode to jolt Washington, which leads the nation in per capita murders and was haunted earlier this year by a killer who stalked pedestrians. He is awaiting trial.
