LOCAL NOTES : Ex-Titan Quarterback Joins Pirates

Damon Allen, former Cal State Fullerton quarterback, signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday and will report to spring training in 1994.

Allen, a pitcher, has played professional football for eight years but hasn’t played baseball since he was at Fullerton. He was a relief pitcher on the 1984 Titan team that won the College World Series.

Allen, the brother of Marcus Allen of the Kansas City Chiefs, will play for the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos again this season, then report to a winter league club or the Arizona Fall League. Allen guided the the Titans to the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. championship in 1983 and led them to an 11-1 record in 1984.

Pirate director of scouting Jack Zduriencik decided to sign Allen, who had impressed scouts with his fastball during a recent workout.

Laguna Beach’s Jeff Booth and San Clemente’s Dino Andino have been added to the Team USA lineup, one of six rosters announced Tuesday for the Op Pro surfing championships tag-team competition.

Booth and Andino, both regulars on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals’ world tour, replace San Clemente’s Mike Parsons and Laguna Beach’s Alisa Schwarzstein. The tag-team competition is scheduled June 30-July 2 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Newport Beach’s Richie Collins, defending world champion Kelly Slater of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and 1990 Op champion Todd Holland are back from last year’s team that beat Australia in the finals.

ASP officials selected the teams based on last year’s world tour and qualifying series. The tag-team competition purse is $14,000.
