AGOURA HILLS : Sheriff Plans Citizen Advisory Committee

Share

Trying to increase civilian input, sheriff’s officials are planning a citizens advisory committee for residents of unincorporated areas served by the Lost Hills/Malibu Station.

Applications will be accepted until July 16 for the committee, recommended in last year’s Koltz Commission report on excessive force in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Stations in other areas of the county reportedly are setting up similar panels.

“We want to hear the community’s ideas,” said Lt. Jim Pierson of the Lost Hills/Malibu Station. “What we may be thinking is important in terms of law enforcement may not always be what the citizens think is important. . . . And the residents of the unincorporated areas don’t have the same ongoing contact with us that is available in the cities.”

The committee of at least seven residents will meet quarterly at first and more often if necessary, Pierson said. Members will be taken on patrol and trained in the methods and protocol of the Sheriff’s Department.

Applicants from unincorporated areas of Chatsworth, Topanga Canyon, Malibu, Agoura and Malibou Lake/Monte Nido will be chosen by July 30, to reflect the gender, class, age and ethnic composition of the area, Pierson said. All candidates are subject to a criminal record check.
