A Bosnian Muslim leader warned Friday that Europe would face a wave of terrorism if the world abandoned his people.

The warning came from Bosnian Vice President Ejup Ganic, who said neither he nor President Alija Izetbegovic would accept an invitation to consider carving up the former Yugoslav republic into three ethnic ministates.

“I will not be able to sign the plan which will legitimize genocide and ethnic cleansing. I don’t want to be part of that,” Ganic said. “If the international community decided to finish with us, of course terrorism will start all over Europe.”

Heavy fighting flared between Muslims and Croats in central Bosnia as Ganic issued the warning.

Ganic said he and Izetbegovic, both Muslims, would not attend a meeting in Zagreb, Croatia, called by seven other presidency members to discuss the Serb-Croat proposal to partition Bosnia.

In Belgrade, the Parliament of Yugoslavia--formed by Serbia and Montenegro--elected a new state president, Zoran Lilic, a hard-liner ally of Serbia’s President Slobodan Milosevic. Lilic replaces Dobrica Cosic, who was ousted by extreme nationalists June 1.
