Ahmed H. Zewail, Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Physics at Caltech, received an honorary doctor of science degree from the American University in Cairo. The honorary degree was awarded in recognition of his distinguished scholarship and contribution to scientific research.

Established in 1919, the American University in Cairo is a private institution of higher education engaged in teaching, research and service exemplifying American education principles while recognizing the heritage of Egypt and the surrounding Arab world.

Zewail received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Alexandria in Egypt in 1967 and 1969. In 1974, he was awarded his doctorate in the field of laser chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania.

Zewail has served on the editorial and advisory boards of several scientific journals, including the Journal of Physical Chemistry and the Chemical Physical Letters.

He has also chaired seven international conferences, and is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the National Science Foundation Award (three times) and the King Faisal International Prize in Science.

John E. Bryson of South Pasadena has been elected to the board of directors of the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, founded after the 1984 Olympic Games.

Bryson has been Southern California Edison Co.’s chairman and chief executive since 1990. He joined the company in 1984 as senior vice president for law and finance, and became executive vice president and chief financial officer in 1985.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation is endowed with Southern California’s share of the surplus from the 1984 Olympic Games. The foundation awards grants to youth sports organizations, initiates its own youth sports program and manages the Paul Ziffren Sports Resource Center Library.

An Oregon native, Bryson graduated from Stanford University in 1965 and earned a law degree from Yale in 1969.

Bryson is a member of the board of directors of Rebuild L.A., Times Mirror Co., First Interstate Bancorp, the World Resources Institute and the Council on Foreign Relations, and also serves on the Board of Trustees of Stanford University.
