Personal Communicator Makes Its Market Debut: American Telephone & Telegraph Co. began selling a hand-held, pen-based device that combines fax, electronic mail, cellular phone and personal-organizer functions at selected AT&T; Phone Center Stores in Grand Rapids, Mich. and the Detroit area. AT&T; and EO Inc., based in Silicon Valley, are selling the EO 440 Personal Communicator for $1,999 and up. AT&T; holds a majority interest in EO Inc. The device is the first on the market of a generation expected to include Apple Computer’s Newton communicator. Tandy, working with Casio Computer Co. of Japan, plans to offer a similar product, called Zoomer.
