OJAI : County Backs Scenic Status for Highway

Share

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday endorsed an effort to seek Scenic Byway status for a winding 38-mile stretch of California 33.

The supervisors’ 5-0 vote will clear the way for U.S. Forest Service officials to draft a proposal to send to forest service chief Dale Robertson in Washington for his approval.

Forest officials have been working on gaining the scenic designation for the rural portion of the highway north of Ojai since 1987.

With Robertson’s blessing, forest officials could apply for federal funds needed to improve and maintain the highway and build various scenic stops along the route. The money would also be used to place information guides along the highway to increase public understanding of the forest.

“I hope it’s successful,” Supervisor Maria E. VanderKolk said. “We need to try to preserve these areas.”
