SHERMAN OAKS : $1.5 Million OKd for Boulevard Buses
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority approved $1.5 million Wednesday to fund a trolley-like bus service that Sherman Oaks business and homeowners have requested to alleviate congestion on Ventura Boulevard.
The city of Los Angeles is expected to provide another $700,000 to operate the bus service for the next four years.
Four natural gas-powered mini-buses, which resemble old-fashion trolleys, would run along Ventura Boulevard from Fulton Avenue on the east and Firmament Avenue on the west, serving several hotels and shopping areas in between, such as the Radisson Hotel, the Sherman Oaks Galleria and the Sherman Oaks Fashion Square.
Sherman Oaks business and homeowners launched a letter-writing campaign in May to muster support for the trolley/bus service, sending more than 500 letters to the MTA and local officials.
Jeff Brain, president of the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce and the driving force behind the bus proposal, said he expects the service to begin by the end of 1993. The fare will be 25 cents, he said.
