World IN BRIEF : AZERBAIJAN : Warlord Elevated to Prime Minister

The rebel warlord who drove Azerbaijan’s elected president from office was named prime minister and head of the armed forces after three days of bargaining with the country’s resurgent political strongman, former Communist Party boss Geidar Aliyev. Suret Guseinov, a 34-year-old wool millionaire, lawmaker and field commander, won the post by a vote of Parliament and immediately promised to reverse the army’s string of defeats by Armenian forces in the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
