2nd Candidate Runs for Superintendent

A former board member of the Ventura Unified School District has announced her candidacy for Ventura County superintendent of schools.

Ventura resident Barbara Myers, 44, will oppose interim Supt. Charles Weis in the 1994 June primary, Myers said this week.

With at least two candidates seeking the $110,000-a-year job, Ventura voters will have a choice for the first time in more than two decades. James Cowan, who retired recently with 16 months left in office, was appointed to the position in 1969 and ran unopposed for six four-year terms.

Weis, who said earlier this week that he would seek the office, was assistant county superintendent and Cowan’s hand-picked replacement. But Myers doesn’t believe Weis will have an advantage as the incumbent.

“He admits he doesn’t have name recognition, and it’s debatable how much he’ll get in 11 months,” she said.

Myers, a literature teacher at Isbell Middle School in Santa Paula, was elected to three terms as a Ventura Unified board member starting in 1980.
