Pasadena : Thurgood Marshall Street

A one-block stretch of the street north of City Hall is officially Thurgood Marshall Street after ribbon-cutting ceremonies Saturday.

The City Council voted June 22 to rename that section of Ramona Street, between Garfield and Euclid avenues, in honor of the late U.S. Supreme Court justice, who died in January at 84. Street signs went up Saturday.

The Pasadena and Altadena chapters of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People had pressed for the designation.

Marshall, the first black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, served 24 years on the bench.

He was “a role model not only for all black leaders locally as well as nationwide, but remains a role model for all those who assume judicial, political or community leadership roles,” Altadena NAACP President Jalal Sudan said.
