Traffic Signal Project Scheduled
The county will spend about $750,000 to synchronize traffic signals at 57 intersections in Alhambra, San Gabriel, Temple City, Arcadia, La Verne, Pomona and Claremont.
The work, which is scheduled to begin in November and take about six months, includes installation of a system to synchronize traffic signals along 12.6 miles of roadway along Main Street, Las Tunas Drive and Arrow Highway. The Board of Supervisors last week awarded a contract for the work.
Synchronized signals smooth the flow of traffic along major thoroughfares. With fewer cars stopping and starting repeatedly at intersections, congestion and vehicular emissions are reduced, county officials said.
The project is part of the county’s Five-Year Traffic Signal Synchronization Program, initiated by County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich in 1988. County officials hope to eventually synchronize traffic signals in 800 intersections along 40 routes in 58 cities.
The funds will come from the county Proposition C half-cent sales tax for transportation-related programs.
