Hurricane Not Likely to Affect O.C. : Weather: Calvin is believed too far south, east to rile Southland waters.

Hurricane Calvin, which has left 28 people dead and thousands homeless in Mexico, will probably have no impact on Orange County weather and surf conditions, meteorologists said Wednesday.

Calvin spent Wednesday traveling about 12 m.p.h. along the southwestern coast of Mexico between Manzanillo and Cabo Corrintes, with gusts as strong as 90 m.p.h. But the storm will probably stay too far south and east to cause any damage or ripple the waters off the Southland coast.

“At this point, we don’t expect much problem weather-wise. . . . We may see an increase in afternoon thunderstorms in the deserts near the weekend,” said meteorologist Sean Collins of Surfline/Wavetrak, a weather reporting service for surfers. “We don’t expect any rains from Hurricane Calvin at all.”

Collins explained that any swell from Calvin would be blocked from coming to the Orange County coast by Baja California. The hurricane would affect the county surf only if it swerved to the west, Collins said, guessing that there is a 20% chance of such a shift, which in any case would not happen before Sunday.

“At this point, it doesn’t look like (Calvin is) going to affect any of Southern California’s weather, at least for a couple of days,” agreed James McCutcheon, a meteorologist for WeatherData, which provides forecasts for The Times.

McCutcheon predicted that Calvin might bring a few high clouds this weekend, but doubted that the hurricane would have any significant impact.

Still, local surfers this week are enjoying unseasonably warm waters and some swell, which Collins said is coming from a storm off the coast of New Zealand. Waves have been three to five feet.

“It is going to be a little bit dangerous,” Collins warned. “Calvin will not be affecting Orange County at this point, but we don’t want everyone going out to the beaches thinking everything’s fine, because we do have this other swell.”
