SAN FERNANDO : Civic Center Parking Changes Approved

Share

A series of measures to improve parking near the Civic Center will be implemented in coming months, including the expansion of parking time limits near the county courthouse.

The City Council, acting as the Parking Authority, recommended the changes Tuesday after a city survey found that nearly one-fourth of the cars parked on the street remained more than an hour, the posted time limit on surrounding streets.

“We know what people’s habits are. We’re trying to distribute them (motorists) on the street more efficiently,” said city engineer Jerry Wedding.

The field survey found that the city’s Civic Center parking lot at First Street and Maclay Avenue never filled up, while two county parking lots closer to the courthouse were often full.

A recommendation to install signs directing motorists to the 100-space Civic Center parking lot, where all-day parking costs $1, was applauded by at least one council member.

“Nobody knows this thing exists,” said Councilman Doude Wysbeek of the lot, located across the street from City Hall and next to the police station.

Under the recommendations, the city will expand the one-hour parking time limit to two hours on First, Second and Third streets, between Maclay Avenue and Macneil Street.
