Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Dam Recreation Site to Be Closed During Renovation Project

Share

The Littlerock Dam recreation area, a popular spot for fishing, boating and swimming, will be closed until early next year as part of a $20.7-million renovation project that includes strengthening the 69-year-old dam.

As many as 450,000 people visit the east Antelope Valley recreation area annually, although in dry years that number dwindles to about 100,000, according to the Palmdale Water District, which is overseeing the restoration project.

When the dam renovation is complete, the recreation area will offer such amenities as a new boat ramp and day-use areas.

The Littlerock Dam recreation area, located in the Angeles National Forest, has been closed on weekdays since May 10. It will now be closed every day until at least February.

The dam collects runoff water from the nearby San Gabriel Mountains. The Palmdale Water District gets as much as one-third of the water it needs to meet customer demands from the dam, which was completed in 1924. The dam, about two miles from the San Andreas Fault, is being reinforced to meet earthquake standards.

Nearby Basin Campground and the off-road vehicle area south of the reservoir will remain open although access will be limited during the construction period. Recorded information is available by calling (805) 944-9653.
