A Sept. 17 Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre date has been set for Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD festival tour. Gabriel will headline the eclectic shows following his own summer tour. Also on the lineup are Crowded House, English group James, reggae band Inner Circle and a variety of world music performers, including Anglo-Indian singer Sheila Chandra, the Drummers of Burundi and the duo Shankar & Caroline. . . .

Alice Cooper is assembling a box set anthology covering his 20 years in rock theater, due for fall release. Cooper is also working on a new concept album with comic book writer Neil Gaiman, best known for his “Sandman” series. The album, due in spring, will be preceded by a series of comic books previewing the story of a young boy taken through a series of weird events. . . .

Midnight Oil will donate 25 cents from each ticket sold in some cities on its upcoming North American tour to the Concerts for the Environment organization. The tour starts Friday in Victoria, British Columbia, and includes a stop at Universal Amphitheatre on Oct. 6. . . .

The future of the Sugarcubes is apparently uncertain. The Iceland band’s lead singer, Bjork Gudmundsdottir,is planning a tour to support her new solo album, and a spokeswoman says it could spell the end of the group. . . .

Rickie Lee Jones is producing a mostly instrumental album by guitarist Leo Kottke. . . . Huey Lewis’ first album on Elektra has been delayed until fall while perfectionist Lewis is reworking some of the tracks. Lewis may also turn up on the big screen, unless a scene featuring him in the new Robert Altman film, “Short Cuts,” ends up on the cutting room floor. The scene is reportedly a “crude” display that’s a good bet to get people talking. . . .

German industrial band Die Haut, which usually works as an instrumental unit, enlisted various vocalists for its album “Head On,” due in August. Among the singers: Deborah Harry, Nick Cave veterans Blixa Bargeld and Kid Congo Powers, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and Lydia Lunch.
