San Gabriel : 3% Pay Raise for Firefighters
After more than a year of negotiations with employee unions for firefighters and for police and fire management, pay increases of at least 3% were approved unanimously by the City Council on Tuesday.
The unions, working under a contract that expired in July, 1991, had foregone salary increases to help the city through a time of fiscal austerity, according to a report from City Administrator P. Michael Paules.
Money for the raises will come from a reserve fund in the 1993-94 budget.
The council’s action boosts salaries close to the average of 10 nearby cities, the report said. San Gabriel’s pay scale had slipped during the past two years. For example, pay for San Gabriel police lieutenants was more than 10% behind the average.
The council also approved a 3% raise for non-union city employees. The police officers’ union is still negotiating with the city.
