Cox to Seek Feinstein’s Senate Seat
Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach) has decided to run next year for the U.S. Senate seat held by Dianne Feinstein, according to a letter he has sent to his financial supporters.
“I will soon be announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate,” Cox revealed in the letter. “But before I make the public announcement, I wanted to write you first.”
Reached at his Newport Beach home on Saturday, Cox, 40, wouldn’t confirm his candidacy. He said he would make no public announcement until an Anaheim Hills fund-raiser late this month.
Feinstein and another Democrat, Barbara Boxer, won their Senate seats last November, but Feinstein was elected to fill an unexpired term and faces reelection.
Last year, Feinstein defeated another Orange County Republican, Sen. John Seymour, who had been appointed to the seat by Gov. Pete Wilson.
Shortly after Feinstein’s election last November, former Rep. William E. Dannemeyer (R-Fullerton), announced his intention to run for the seat. Rep. Robert K. Dornan (R-Garden Grove) has also expressed interest in running for the Senate.
