WESTMINSTER : Council to Consider Budget-Cutting Plan

The City Council will hold a public hearing tonight to finalize its 1993-94 fiscal year budget.

The council’s plan includes cuts to a number of departments, including the controversial slashing of more than $1.5 million from the Fire Department.

The city’s budget proposal will eliminate a deficit that would have left the city bankrupt, officials said.

“We have a balanced budget,” said Councilman Tony Lam. “It was tough--we spent night after night deciding what to cut. It was terrible, but it has a happy ending.”

Cuts to the Fire Department include elimination of a fire truck as well as a reorganization of the department, which officials say will save money.

The proposal also includes increasing business licensing fees and cutting one of three vacant police officer positions.

Lam said residents should not be affected.
