Beach Pollution

Your editorial “Making Waves” (July 3) belonged on the front page. Los Angeles is still functioning on a sewer system that was planned decades ago, when this city was much smaller. It’s no wonder that every time it rains our beautiful beaches, what outsiders think of most when they think of Los Angeles, are deemed unsuitable for humans. It is easy to keep people out of the ocean when this happens, but what about other animals: the innocent marine mammals, the plankton that give us oxygen to breathe, and the fish that end up on our dinner tables?
Enough of our tax money is being taken to upgrade our treatment plants, but it gets lost by bureaucrats. For once, we human beings need to use our superior intellect and unique perspective to do what is right.
